Pune authorities have confirmed six cases of Zika virus infection, including two pregnant women, as of Monday.

One 28-year-old pregnant woman from Erandwane tested positive for Zika on Friday, while another woman in her 12th week of pregnancy was diagnosed on Monday. Both women are currently asymptomatic and in good health.

The initial case was identified in Erandwane with a 46-year-old doctor testing positive, followed by his 15-year-old daughter. Additional cases involve a 47-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man from Mundhwa.

Zika virus, transmitted by the Aedes mosquito, can cause microcephaly in fetuses, affecting their brain development.

To control mosquito breeding, the Pune Municipal Corporation’s health department has intensified surveillance and implemented measures such as fogging and fumigation.

Zika virus was first identified in Uganda in 1947 and is transmitted by mosquitoes that also spread dengue and chikungunya infections.
