Hundreds of yoga enthusiasts gathered at a scenic venue overlooking the Potomac river at the Wharf to mark International Yoga Day. The event, graced by India’s Deputy Ambassador to the US Sripriya Ranganathan, commenced with prayers and Indian classical dance performances. Participants engaged in a yoga session that emphasized unity and harmony, reflecting the essence of this ancient Indian practice.
Celebrated annually on June 21, the International Day of Yoga’s theme for this year is ‘Yoga for Self and Society’. Addressing the gathering, Ranganathan highlighted yoga’s role in fostering balance and harmony, essential for a brighter future. She noted that the United Nations recognized the universal appeal of yoga by proclaiming June 21 as the International Day of Yoga in 2014, following a proposal by India and supported by 175 member states. Originating in the ancient Indus Valley civilization, yoga has transcended borders and is now practiced by millions worldwide, she added.
The event also promoted the adoption of millets and eco-friendly products and practices in daily life, underscoring yoga’s holistic approach to personal and environmental well-being, as stated in a media release.
