Tamil Nadu: After consuming illegal alcohol, 29 people died and 60 hospitalized in Kallakurichi:
On Wednesday, a tragic incident unfolded in Tamil Nadu’s Kallakurichi district where at least 29 people lost their lives and over 60 were hospitalized after reportedly consuming illicit liquor. Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed shock and grief over the incident, emphasizing swift action against those responsible. He assured the public of stringent measures to tackle such crimes, promising immediate action on any information provided by the public.
Authorities arrested K Kannukutti, seizing about 200 liters of illegal liquor laced with deadly methanol. MK Stalin promptly ordered a thorough investigation by the Crime Branch-CID to uncover all aspects of the incident. Following the tragedy, the district collector and superintendent of police were replaced and suspended respectively, along with nine other police officers, signaling accountability for lapses in preventing the consumption of illicit liquor.
In response to the crisis, MK Stalin dispatched senior ministers to Kallakurichi to support affected families, while hospitals, including JIPMER in Puducherry, treated critically ill patients. Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi also expressed condolences and wished a speedy recovery to those hospitalized. The Raj Bhavan highlighted the recurring issue of deaths linked to counterfeit alcohol across the state, emphasizing the need for stronger measures to combat illicit alcohol production and consumption.
The incident underscores a grave societal concern and has prompted immediate governmental responses aimed at preventing such tragedies in the future and ensuring justice for the victims and their families.
