The highly anticipated sequel Stree 2, featuring Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao, has made an impressive debut at the box office, surpassing the opening day collections of major 2023 hits Animal and Pathaan. According to trade analyst Taran Adarsh, Stree 2 raked in Rs 64.8 crore from its preview shows on Wednesday and its official release on Thursday. Of this, Rs 9.4 crore was earned on Wednesday night, with the remaining Rs 55.4 crore coming in on Thursday.
Directed by Amar Kaushik, Stree 2 now holds the record for the highest opening of the year, surpassing Fighter starring Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone, which had an opening day collection of Rs 24.6 crore in January. However, the multi-language release Kalki 2898 AD remains the largest Indian opener of the year, with a collection of Rs 95 crore.
According to Sacnilk, the film achieved an impressive overall occupancy of 77.09 percent on Thursday, with notable figures of 86.75 percent in Delhi-NCR and 81 percent in Mumbai. Released on Independence Day, Stree 2 is expected to benefit from an extended five-day weekend, with Monday being a holiday for Raksha Bandhan in many parts of India.
The film faced competition from John Abraham’s Vedaa and Akshay Kumar’s Khel Khel Mein. Vedaa, also released in Tamil and Telugu, earned Rs 6.52 crore across India, while Khel Khel Mein collected Rs 5 crore.
Stree 2 continues the horror-comedy universe created by producer Dinesh Vijan, which began with the original Stree in 2018 and includes films like Roohi, Bhediya, and Munjya. Released earlier this year with minimal promotion, Munjya earned Rs 107.48 crore, making it the third biggest Hindi hit of the year.
The cast of Stree 2 also features Aparshakti Khurana, Pankaj Tripathi, and Abhishek Bannerjee, among others.
