A red alert has been issued across Northern India as severe monsoon rains have caused widespread devastation, resulting in dozens of deaths and over 100 people reported missing. This crisis comes just days after a tragedy struck Kerala’s Wayanad.

In Uttarakhand, heavy rainfall on Wednesday led to the deaths of four people, including two children, with several others injured. A cloudburst 8 km from Ghansali and the collapse of a house in Haridwar’s village area compounded the situation. Additionally, nearly 200 pilgrims on the Kedarnath Yatra route were stranded as the rain washed away part of their path.

In Shimla district, over 30 people are missing following a cloudburst in the Jhakhari area early Thursday. Roads have been washed away, and a local hydropower project has sustained damage, according to Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap. Rescue operations have been launched involving the National Disaster Response Force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, local police, and home guards. Drones are also being deployed to locate the missing individuals.

In Kullu, a building collapsed and was swept into the Parvati River on Thursday morning. Water levels in the Beas River have risen significantly due to continuous rain in Manali.

The situation worsened in Delhi NCR, which recorded 100 mm of rain in just one hour, equivalent to a cloudburst. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for the entire Delhi-NCR region, forecasting moderate to heavy rain or thunderstorms with gusty winds of 30 to 50 kilometers per hour. Following severe waterlogging and traffic congestion, all government and private schools in the region were closed for the day.

Tragically, three people were electrocuted near Gurgaon’s IFFCO Chowk metro station due to the heavy rain. Earlier, a woman and her son drowned in an open drain in East Delhi’s Mayur Vihar Phase 3.
