The Pune Railway Division has proposed an expansion of Pune station to the Railway Board, suggesting the addition of four new platforms and the introduction of stoppages for five express trains at stations beyond Pune. These new platforms are intended to be constructed in the Maldhakka region on Pune railway land, according to a DRM official. The division has initiated this plan to combat train detentions and congestion at Pune station, aiming to integrate it into the station’s remodeling project if approved. Despite the current absence of space for expansion, Indu Rani Dubey, the DRM of Pune Division, highlighted the availability of ample land in the railway’s Maldhakka area.
She emphasized the proposal’s distinction from the existing remodeling plan but indicated potential integration if finalized. The proposal also includes facilitating stops for five express trains at additional stations. This initiative responds to the significant daily traffic of around one lakh passengers at Pune station, with plans to decongest the station and ease commuter travel, particularly benefiting those from East Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Presently, express trains originate and terminate at Pune, causing congestion; however, if approved, the proposal will distribute stops and alleviate commuter inconvenience.
