A tragic and disturbing incident at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata has sparked outrage after a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor was found dead under alarming circumstances. The victim’s family and various groups have alleged that she was both raped and murdered.
The young doctor’s body was discovered in a semi-nude state in the seminar hall on Friday, prompting an immediate response from law enforcement and government officials due to the severity of the allegations.
In response, students at the college have launched protests, demanding a thorough investigation and raising concerns about security on the hospital premises.
The police have detained an individual named Sanjoy Roy, based on CCTV footage from the hospital, as the investigation continues.
The victim, who was responsible for patients in the chest medicine ward, was last seen during her night shift, which ended at 2 am. She was reportedly heading to a third-floor seminar room to rest and study. Her absence was noticed the next morning when her phone went unanswered, leading to the grim discovery of her body by an intern.
Eyewitnesses reported that the doctor’s body was partially covered with a bedsheet, with her personal belongings scattered around. Initial reports suggest signs of a struggle and severe physical assault.
Kolkata’s Police Commissioner, Vineet Goyal, along with additional police personnel, inspected the site. Forensic teams conducted preliminary examinations, which indicated violent resistance and potential sexual assault, based on the injuries found on her body.
In response to the tragedy, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has reached out to the victim’s family, offering support and promising efforts to ensure justice. The hospital has formed an 11-member committee to investigate the incident, while the police have established a Special Investigation Team dedicated to the homicide case.
The incident has garnered national attention, with the Indian Medical Association (IMA) condemning the violence and threatening nationwide protests if swift action is not taken.
