In the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup, Australia secured a convincing 28-run victory over Bangladesh under the DLS method in Antigua. After restricting Bangladesh to 140-8, Australia’s David Warner played a crucial role with an unbeaten 53 off 35 balls, guiding his team to 100-2 before rain interrupted play and led to an early conclusion of the match.
Pat Cummins became only the second Australian to achieve a T20 World Cup hat-trick, dismissing Mahmudullah and Mahedi Hasan in the 18th over and then catching Towhid Hridoy off the first ball of the 20th over. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto top-scored for Bangladesh with 41 runs before falling to Adam Zampa, who impressed with figures of 2-24. Hridoy contributed 40 off 28 balls, boosting Bangladesh’s total, but they fell short of setting a competitive target.
Australia’s openers provided a strong start to the chase, posting a partnership of 65 runs. Despite leg-spinner Rishad Hossain taking two quick wickets after a brief rain delay, Warner’s innings ensured Australia maintained control. Mitchell Starc’s early breakthrough set the tone for Australia’s dominance, with their experienced bowling attack containing Bangladesh’s fragile batting line-up.
Australia, now tied with India at the top of Group 1 with two points, will face Afghanistan next. Bangladesh, meanwhile, will look to bounce back against India in their upcoming match.
