The Waqf (Amendment) Bill will be introduced in Parliament on Thursday. The bill aims to change the law that governs Waqf boards. It also proposes renaming the Waqf Act, 1995, to the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency, and Development Act, 1995.
Parliament’s monsoon session started on July 22 and will end on August 12.
On Wednesday, Finance Minister N. Sitharaman presented two bills: the Jammu and Kashmir Appropriation (No. 3) Bill, 2024, and the Appropriation (No. 2) Bill, 2024. These bills are being considered in the Rajya Sabha.
In the Lok Sabha, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi called for higher compensation and a comprehensive rehabilitation package for those affected by the Wayanad landslide. He also asked the government to declare the Wayanad disaster a national emergency.
The Samajwadi Party (SP) plans to oppose the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, when it is introduced today. Congress MPs, including KC Venugopal, have issued a notice saying the bill violates the right to freedom of religion, harms federalism, and could cause communal divisions.
IUML MP Mohammad Basheer has also opposed the bill. He claims the government wants to make Waqf boards ineffective. Basheer criticized the lack of stakeholder consultation and said he will seek legal action after the session ends.
