Georgia made headlines at Euro 2024 with a stunning upset, defeating Portugal 2-0 to secure a place in the round of 16, marking their first major tournament appearance in history. The match saw Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scoring within two minutes due to a defensive error by Portugal, followed by Georges Mikautadze adding a second goal from a penalty in the second half.

Known for their fearless and intense style of play, Georgia’s performance in the tournament has captured the admiration of fans. Despite being the lowest-ranked team at Euro 2024 and previously narrowly losing to Turkey and drawing with Czech Republic, Georgia displayed resilience and tactical acumen against Portugal.

Portugal, having already secured qualification with wins over Czech Republic and Turkey, aimed to become only the second team, after Spain, to win all three group stage matches at Euro 2024. However, Georgia needed a victory to progress, which they achieved through a combination of opportunistic attacking and solid defense.

Throughout the game, Georgia’s defense thwarted Portugal’s attempts, limiting them largely to long-range shots that goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili expertly managed. Despite Ronaldo’s frustration and claims for a penalty, Georgia maintained composure and focus, capitalizing on their chances to secure a historic win.

Georgian celebrations were jubilant as Mikautadze’s goal secured their advancement, making him the tournament’s top scorer with three goals. The victory was not just significant for Georgia’s footballing prowess but also a momentous occasion for the country, uniting its fans and showcasing their potential on an international stage despite their underdog status.

Ranked 74th globally and with a population of less than four million, Georgia’s triumph against Portugal stands as a testament to their determination and skill, marking a historic milestone in their footballing journey.
