General Upendra Dwivedi, PVSM, AVSM, has assumed the role of the 30th Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), succeeding General Manoj Pande, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, ADC, who retired after more than forty years of service on June 30, 2024.
With an illustrious 40-year career in the Armed Forces, General Upendra Dwivedi was commissioned into the Regiment of Jammu & Kashmir Rifles in 1984 after graduating from Sainik School, Rewa (MP). He brings extensive experience in command and staff roles across various theatres, including Northern, Eastern, and Western regions, in diverse operational environments.
Taking charge amidst dynamic global geo-strategic challenges and evolving security landscapes shaped by technological advancements, General Dwivedi’s tenure will prioritize enhancing operational readiness to counter emerging threats. Addressing unconventional security challenges will also be a key focus to strengthen national defense capabilities.
Recognized for his strategic acumen and effective leadership, General Dwivedi has held pivotal positions and played a crucial role in addressing intricate security issues. He possesses specialized knowledge in integrating modern technologies into military systems to enhance operational effectiveness, aligning with the Indian Army’s modernization objectives under the Atmanirbharta initiative.
Furthermore, he is dedicated to upholding the principles of the Chetwode Motto, emphasizing trust, empowering junior officers, and ensuring the well-being of soldiers, veterans, and their families.
