Gautam Gambhir and WV Raman are expected to be considered by BCCI to become India

Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir was considered the frontrunner to replace Rahul Dravid as the head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team until recently. Reports indicated that the BCCI had almost finalized a deal with Gambhir, with an official announcement expected after India’s participation in the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup. However, another strong contender emerged in WV Raman, who boasts extensive coaching experience. Raman, having coached domestic teams like Tamil Nadu and Bengal, as well as serving roles in the IPL and as the head coach of the Indian women’s team, brings a wealth of experience compared to Gambhir, who has been a mentor for IPL franchises and played a pivotal role in Kolkata Knight Riders’ IPL victory.

Raman’s credentials were bolstered by a successful interview with the BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), prompting suggestions that both Gambhir and Raman could potentially be signed by the board. A report indicated that utilizing their complementary skills could benefit Indian cricket, possibly with Gambhir as head coach and Raman focusing on batting or red-ball cricket.

The CAC members face a tough decision in selecting between Gambhir and Raman, with no overseas candidates currently in contention. This development underscores the pivotal moment as the BCCI navigates through the coaching selection process, aiming to make a decision that will positively impact the future of Indian cricket.
