The victory parade celebrating the Indian cricket team’s T20 World Cup win turned chaotic and distressing for several fans gathered at Mumbai’s Marine Drive, as reported by the Mumbai police. According to eyewitness Ravi Solanki, who spoke to ANI, the event was marred by disorganization and lack of crowd control. Originally scheduled between 5 pm to 6 pm, the team’s arrival was delayed, leading to a growing crowd and escalating tensions. Solanki described a sudden commotion that resulted in people shouting and falling over each other between 8:15 to 8:45 pm, highlighting the inadequate management and unpreparedness of authorities.
One victim, Rishab Mahesh Yadav, recounted his harrowing experience of becoming unconscious due to the overwhelming crowd and lack of space. He emphasized the mismanagement and expressed relief after receiving medical attention. Despite these challenges, fans showed immense enthusiasm and support, cheering the players as they paraded with the trophy atop an open bus. The celebratory atmosphere was marked by fans dancing and displaying their joy at India’s triumph.During the parade, players interacted with fans, distributing balls, and obliging requests for selfies and autographs, illustrating the strong bond between the team and its supporters. The culmination of the event at Wankhede Stadium included a felicitation ceremony where the BCCI honored the team with a significant cheque of ₹125 crores, underscoring the importance of their achievement.
Overall, while the parade was intended to be a joyous occasion honoring the team’s success, the unfortunate incidents of injuries and distress among fans underscored the challenges of managing such large-scale events.
