Nada Hafez, the 26-year-old fencer from Cairo, shared on Instagram that she was “carrying a little Olympian one” shortly after advancing to the round of 16 in women’s saber on Monday.

Hafez, who overcame former NCAA champion Elizabeth Tartakovsky of the United States, was later defeated by South Korea’s Jeon Hayoung. Despite the challenging competition, Hafez took pride in her achievement, reflecting on the difficulties she faced during her pregnancy.

“The rollercoaster of pregnancy is tough on its own, but balancing life and sports has been incredibly strenuous, yet rewarding,” Hafez wrote. “I am filled with pride for reaching the round of 16!”

With a background in gymnastics and a degree in medicine, Hafez is a three-time Olympian and previously earned gold medals in both the individual and team saber events at the 2019 African Games.

On Monday, Hafez concluded the competition ranked 16th, marking her best result in any of her three Olympic appearances.
