Parts of Delhi experienced substantial rainfall today, offering a respite from the oppressive heat that had been prevailing. According to reports from the news agency ANI, areas such as Munirka, Sarita Vihar, and others witnessed heavy downpours, bringing relief to residents. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had forecasted further showers throughout the day, indicating a welcome change from the recent weather patterns.
In recent weeks, Delhi and other parts of northern India had been enduring intense heatwaves. Delhi specifically had faced a scorching period, with nine days in June alone being classified as heatwave days—a stark contrast to no such days in both 2023 and 2022. This sudden shift in weather, marked by heavy rains, has been eagerly awaited by the populace.
On Wednesday, the IMD had predicted that Delhi would experience maximum temperatures around 38 degrees Celsius and minimum around 29 degrees Celsius. The Safdarjung Observatory, Delhi’s primary weather station, recorded a temperature of 39 degrees Celsius on the same day, which was two degrees above the normal expected temperature.
This change in weather pattern not only brings relief to the residents but also underscores the variability of Indian monsoon patterns, where intense heat can swiftly give way to heavy rain showers. The IMD’s ongoing predictions will be crucial in monitoring further developments and ensuring that the public remains informed and prepared for any subsequent changes in weather conditions.
