Deadpool and Wolverine has exceeded box office expectations in its first three days, with the Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman-starring superhero film earning Rs 66.15 crore in India, according to early estimates by industry tracker Sacnilk.
Directed by Shawn Levy, the film opened with a strong Rs 21 crore on its first day. It saw a notable increase of approximately 7.86% on the second day, collecting Rs 22.65 crore. However, on Sunday, the film experienced a slight dip, garnering Rs 22.50 crore. Despite this minor drop, Deadpool and Wolverine ranks among the top 10 highest opening weekends for Hollywood films in India, joining the ranks of ‘Avengers: Endgame’, ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, ‘Spiderman: No Way Home’, ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, and ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’.
The film has outperformed ‘Godzilla x Kong’ to become 2024’s biggest Hollywood opener in India. It also stands as the second highest opening weekend collection among Bollywood films this year, trailing only behind ‘Fighter’.
On Sunday, Deadpool and Wolverine had an overall English occupancy of 38.92%, with peak attendance during afternoon and evening shows. Region-wise, the film saw significant occupancy in Chennai (82%), Kochi (49.75%), Bengaluru (43.50%), Kolkata (37%), and Pune (36.75%). In Hindi, the film achieved an occupancy rate of 29.98%, with strong performances in Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Jaipur, NCR, and Mumbai. The Telugu and Tamil versions had occupancies of 21.88% and 58.09%, respectively.
In contrast, the Hindi comedy-drama ‘Bad Newz’, starring Vicky Kaushal and Triptii Dimri, saw a boost in its earnings, reaching Rs 52 crore nett in India. The film earned Rs 3.25 crore on Saturday and Rs 3.75 crore on Sunday, reflecting a jump of over 50%.
It remains to be seen if Deadpool and Wolverine will sustain its momentum through Monday and continue to perform well amidst upcoming releases, including ‘Auron Mein Kaha Dum Tha’ starring Ajay Devgn and Tabu on August 2, and ‘Stree 2’ and ‘Khel Khel Mein’ on August 15.
