Citroen is gearing up to introduce the Basalt SUV coupe to the Indian market, set to be unveiled in August. Positioned to rival popular compact SUVs like the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos, as well as directly compete with the upcoming Tata Curvv, the Basalt promises to make a distinctive mark in its segment.
Design and Styling
The Citroen Basalt adopts styling cues from the C3 and C3 Aircross SUVs, featuring a split grille and a bold split headlight setup. Its rugged appeal is accentuated by squared-off wheel arches, body cladding, and a sloping roofline that merges seamlessly into sporty dual-tone alloy wheels. At the rear, the SUV boasts a tall stance with a prominent silver skid plate and wraparound LED tail lamps reminiscent of the C3 Aircross.
Features
Expected to inherit features from Citroen’s existing lineup, the Basalt will likely include a 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, complemented by a 7-inch digital driver’s display. To compete effectively, Citroen may also offer premium amenities such as automatic climate control, cruise control, a 360-degree camera, ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and a panoramic sunroof.

Safety and Powertrain
Safety features are expected to be robust, with standard offerings likely including six airbags, electronic stability control, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors with camera, and hill hold assist. Powering the Basalt will be a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine generating 110 PS and 205 Nm of torque, coupled with a choice of 6-speed manual and torque converter automatic transmissions. Entry-level variants might feature an 82 PS 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine to cater to varying price points.
Price and Market Competition
Citroen aims to price the Basalt competitively, starting around Rs 11 lakh (ex-showroom). This positions it directly against the Tata Curvv and places it as a compelling alternative to established compact SUVs like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Grand Vitara, Honda Elevate, VW Taigun, Skoda Kushaq, Toyota Hyryder, and MG Astor.
With its distinctive design, robust feature set, and competitive pricing strategy, the Citroen Basalt is poised to make a significant impact in India’s competitive SUV market upon its launch.
