Barbora Krejcikova clinched the Wimbledon 2024 Ladies’ Singles title in a thrilling match against Jasmine Paolini, securing her second Grand Slam singles championship.
The Czech player, who previously won the French Open in 2021, celebrated her victory with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 scoreline after a hard-fought battle. Krejcikova, 28, honored her late mentor Jana Novotna, dedicating the win to the former Wimbledon champion who had encouraged her to pursue a professional tennis career before her passing in 2017.
“I achieved that in Paris in 2021 and it was an unbelievable moment for me, and I never really dreamed that I would win the same trophy as Jana did in 1998,” Krejcikova said.
In a poignant moment on Centre Court, Krejcikova emotionally embraced her team and family, marking the culmination of what she described as the best day of her tennis career and life.
Paolini, 28, faced disappointment in her second consecutive Grand Slam final, falling short in her bid to become Italy’s first women’s singles champion at Wimbledon.
With Krejcikova’s victory, the Czech Republic celebrated back-to-back triumphs in women’s singles at Wimbledon following Marketa Vondrousova’s win in 2023. Krejcikova’s resilience throughout the tournament, overcoming injury and illness earlier in the season, underscored her determination to claim the prestigious title.
Reflecting on her unexpected journey to victory, Krejcikova expressed disbelief and gratitude for her achievement on the hallowed lawns of Wimbledon, where her name now graces the historic Venus Rosewater Dish.
