Global NCAP has recently crash-tested two made-in-India MPVs, the Maruti Ertiga and Renault Triber, specifically for the African market under the Safer Cars for Africa campaign. The results reveal a one-star rating for the Ertiga and a two-star rating for the Triber.
Maruti Ertiga (Africa-Spec) Crash Test Results
The Africa-spec Maruti Ertiga received a one-star rating for adult occupant protection (AOP), scoring 23.63 points out of 34. In the child occupant protection (COP) test, it earned two stars with 19.40 points out of 49. The Ertiga’s bodyshell was rated as unstable, indicating it could not withstand additional loadings. It’s important to note that the India-spec Ertiga, tested under older protocols, scored three stars for both AOP and COP.

Renault Triber (Africa-Spec) Crash Test Results
The Renault Triber achieved a two-star rating in both AOP and COP tests, scoring 22.29 points out of 34 for AOP and 19.99 points out of 49 for COP. Like the Africa-spec Ertiga, the Triber’s bodyshell was deemed unstable and unable to handle further loadings. However, the India-spec Triber had a much better showing, receiving a four-star safety rating from Global NCAP in 2021. This was based on the previous testing standards of the Safer Cars for India campaign.

Differences in Testing and Ratings
The scores for the Maruti Ertiga and Renault Triber tested in Africa do not apply to the versions sold in India. This discrepancy is due to variations in testing protocols. India has transitioned to its own Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (BNCAP), which has replaced Global NCAP for conducting crash tests and providing safety ratings for cars in the country. BNCAP has recently tested four SUVs, reflecting its updated assessment criteria.
In summary, while the Africa-spec versions of these MPVs received lower safety ratings, the Indian models were evaluated under different standards and have achieved better scores.
