The former Mayor of Pune, who is a Maratha leader named Mr. Mohol, secured victory in the elections, defeating Ravindra Dhangekar of the Congress party. This victory was significant as Dhangekar had previously won in a recent Assembly bypoll in Kasba, a stronghold of the BJP. Mr. Mohol’s victory margin of over 1.23 lakh votes helped the BJP maintain control over Pune, Maharashtra’s second-largest city and a major industrial and commercial center, for the third consecutive term.
Mr. Mohol hails from Mulshi tehsil in the district and holds a degree from Kolhapur University. He also received training in wrestling during his time there. With a background in attending RSS ‘shakhas’, he began his political career as a Corporator in 2002 and later chaired the standing committee of the Pune Municipal Corporation before assuming the role of Mayor in 2019. Despite facing defeat in the 2009 Assembly polls from the Khadakwasla seat in Pune, he has remained an influential figure in Pune’s political landscape. “I feel fortunate that I got the opportunity to be part of the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I would like to express my gratitude towards the BJP leadership for giving me this opportunity,” he said.
